Did you know that reading every day during the summer is critical to retaining literacy skills learned during the school year?  Children who don’t read during the summer are at risk for falling behind their peers in the next school year.  The good news is, libraries have come up with a fun way to reward children for their reading during the summer.  If you haven’t yet signed up for our summer reading program, there is still time!  All you need is a library card to sign up.  Any age is welcome to participate.  Kids get weekly prizes as well as entries to win the grand prize at the end of the summer.  Teens and adults will be entered to win several great prizes at the end of the summer.

If you’re interested in joining in the fun this summer, we have event calendars available at the library with all of the fun programs and entertainers we have lined up for the summer.  Events will also be listed here, and on our website: http://blackcreeklibrary.org/library_calendar

Don’t forget – tomorrow we’re making paper airplanes and wind chimes at 2 pm!  No registration is required.

Wednesday, June 27th, from 1 – 3:30 pm, in preparation for Independence Day, we will have lots of fun projects and Fourth of July crafts and activities, including patriotic glasses, picture frames, door hangers, beaded keychains, and more.  We will also talk about American symbols and you can get your picture taken as your favorite president!  Glow sticks and other items will be given out so you can show off your patriotic pride.  There will be something for all ages to do.  No registration required.

Join us on Friday, June 28th, at 10 am for our first performer of the summer, Randy Peterson!  Come and rock with Randy as he presents an upbeat, interactive musical show centered on our summer reading theme.

Can you believe that summer reading starts in just 11 days?  Official sign-ups begin June 11th – we can’t wait for you to see what we have planned this summer.  Make sure to grab an event calendar when you pick up your reading packets!  We also have upcoming programs and performers listed on our website: http://blackcreeklibrary.org/library_calendar

This month, we’re featuring Appetite for Reading – books with a food item in the title.  We’re also featuring Classics for Kids (and nostalgic adults.)  Maybe one of your old favorites will become one of your child’s new favorites!  Take a peek at our June displays the next time you’re in.

For the kiddos, June’s table topic is: what are three things you want to do this summer? Our hallway project is an especially fun one – draw a sandcastle using pointillism (only dots!)  Turn in your table topic or hallway project for a new, fun prize.

Just a reminder – we will be closed Monday, June 4 for a staff work day.  All items will be backdated to our last open day, so they won’t be late.  To renew or place items on hold, please visit www.infosoup.org

Congratulations to our April Kid Reader of the Month, Audrina Lontkowski!  Audrina is 8 years old and in second grade and she loves to read to her little brother and teach him how to read.  When she was a small child, her favorite book was Sleep-over Mouse by Mary Packard, which her grandmother read to her.  Now, her favorite books are the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series by Jeff Kinney - in fact, she loves them so much, she wanted to have her picture taken next to them.  Besides reading, Audrina also likes to play with her Paw Patrol toys, go the park and the gym with her friends and neighbors, and watch soccer and football.  When she grows up, she wants to be a DJ.

To nominate someone for Kid Reader of the Month, you can access the form on our website: http://www.blackcreeklibrary.org/kid-reader-month, through our Facebook page (here’s the direct link that will take you to the online form:) https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/3ZHQZQM, or fill out a paper nomination form at the library.  All winners will have their picture in the paper, along with a short interview.

Don’t forget - tonight at 5:30 pm, is Operation $40K: My Secrets to Living a Thrifty Life with author, blogger, and couponer, Dannelle Gay from Operation $40K (www.operation40k.com.)  Join us to learn the creative ways she was able to cut costs and save over $40,000 in one year!  She will share tips and ideas to inspire others to take control of their financial lives, pay off debt, and save money.  No preregistration necessary.

A big thanks to Shopko!  Black Creek Village Library was the recipient of a $500 grant from Shopko Foundation’s Community Charitable Grant program.  The grant will go to a great cause – summer reading prizes!

Have a great week, everyone, and a safe Memorial Weekend!
