Foreword – August 28, 2023

Black Creek Village Library column

For publication 28 August 2023

As the school year approaches, we’re highlighting books that capture the jitters and excitement that come with a new school (or school year).

This week’s book is for teens—The Field Guide to the North American Teenager by Ben Phillipe. Norris Kaplan is not thrilled when his mom’s new job takes him from Montreal, Canada to Austin, TX in the middle of the school year. What is a Black, hockey-loving, Hatian Canadian to do? At first, he survived by categorizing his classmates into teen movie archtypes: jock, cheerleader, loner, etc. After all, it’s not like he plans to stay there any longer than he has to. His wit and snarky humor capture the attention of some of his classmates, who might be more than the familiar stereotypes would suggest. Teens who are fans of John Green and Jason Reynolds are likely to enjoy the humor, fun, and engaging friendships at the heart of the story.
