Happy New Year!

Are you in the mood to start a new series in the new year? Stop in the library and check out our displays featuring the first book in a series for a variety of genres and ages.

One series we’d like to highlight is The Kopp Sisters series by Amy Stewart. The first book in this series is Girl Waits With Gun , which finds inspiration in the historical record. Constance Kopp and her two sisters (Norma and Fluerette) live quiet, isolated lives on their small farm in New Jersey. After their buggy is struck and overturned by an automobile while on a routine trip into Paterson. Constance, a tall and formidable woman, politely demands the contact information for the driver (Henry Kaufman) before forcing the issue with her considerable presence. When the line-item invoice for the damage done to their buggy is ignored, Constance visits his place of business and pins Kaufman against the wall when he threatens Fleurette. So begins his campaign of threats and intimidation against the sisters, which only strengthens Constance’s determination to bring him to justice despite considerable odds. It unites compelling characters, a plot with escalating stakes (threats, family secrets, and scandal!), and an implicit commentary on expectations held by society for women at the time. Constance Kopp became one of the first female deputy sheriff’s in the country. The series continues to follow the sisters with the author noting when she has taken creative license.
