Ruta Sepetys is known for historical fiction that is informed by careful research and reflects the experiences of “regular” people at a specific point in or period of history. Her latest book, I Will Betray You, takes place in Romania in late 1989. The Iron Curtain is crumbling as former Soviet-bloc countries rise up against their governments, but Romania remains isolated and fearful under the leadership of Nicolae Ceausescu. Seventeen-year-old Cristian is blackmailed by the secret police to become a secret informant in the government’s extensive web of civilian spies. Can he use his role as an informant to his advantage? At what cost? This book captures the oppressive atmosphere of surveillance and paranoia of life in Romania when citizens rightly assumed that anyone in their life may be an informant. It is also a testament to humanity’s will to pursue freedom in the face of insurmountable odds. Highly recommended for teens and adults who enjoy historical fiction.
