Foreword – July 12, 2022

It feels like the summer is flying by so quickly! We have three weeks of youth programs on Tuesday afternoons at 2:00 PM: Knock Your Socks Off on July 12, By the Seeds of Your Plants on July 19, and Commotion in the Ocean on July 26. Storytime continues on Thursdays at 10:15.

We’re collaborating with CFRC by hosting free PACE programs on Wednesday mornings 10:00 AM-12:00 PM in the Community Center on July 6, July, 13, and July 20. PACE programs are designed for families with children ages birth to five-years-old.

We’d like to highlight a book that celebrates the magic of summer—The Season of Styx Malone by Kekla Magoon. Caleb Franklin and his brother are looking forward to a summer of outdoor adventures in their small, rural Indiana town; however, their dreams of a footloose summer are dashed when their scheme to trade their baby sister for contraband is exposed. Then sixeteen-year-old Styx Malone comes to town, recognizes opportunity when he sees it, and convinces the brothers that their ill-gotten fireworks could be the first step in a series of escalating trades that will culminate in a moped! Caleb is eager to seize the opportunity for friendship, adventure, and anything that is not the “ordinary” his father values so much. Little does he know just how far their trades will take them and the secrets he’ll be asked to keep! Themes of risk taking, trust, betrayal, and forgiveness bring heart to a story that captures the possibilities of a new friendship and testing boundaries. Recommended for tweens who enjoy realistic fiction but aren’t afraid to dream big!
