It’s hard to believe it’s already mid-August. The summer really does fly by! Fortunately, there are always adventures to discover at the library.
Looking ahead a bit to the school year, we’re thinking about books that capture that first-day-of school spirit. Truman, by Jean Reidy, is a book that provides a unique perspective—it’s a book told from a pet tortoise’s point-of-view. Truman senses something is up when Sarah gives him two more green beans than usual for breakfast, kisses her finger, touches it to his shell and whispers, “Be brave.” She buttons up a new sweater, takes a backpack, and leaves the apartment to board a bus. After waiting for what feels like too many hours to count, Truman devises a heroic plan to escape from his tank and find Sarah. Will he overcome his fear of the big world outside of his tank? This heartwarming story and charming illustrations will have readers rooting for the adorable Truman and celebrating the affectionate bonds that bind pets and their humans.
