The end of summer is in sight, but it is not too late to turn in your Summer Library Challenge sheets to collect your free book to keep (youth) or reading-themed enamel mug (adults). The deadline to return your forms is August 23.
The end of summer means another school year is about to start. The Next Great Paulie Fink by Ali Benjamin captures the back-to-school spirit. When Caitlyln, who is in seventh grade, enters the classroom in her new (and very quirky) school as the new kid, her classmates literally applaud. Technically, they weren’t applauding for her—they were hoping that Paulie Fink, whose reputation for inspired (but not mean-spirited) pranks is legendary. It turns out that Paulie isn’t coming back, so the kids decide to hold a reality-tv type competition to determine who will fill Paulie’s mischief-making shoes and make school memorable. Caitlyn agrees to serve as a judge, but as she interviews her classmates and collects stories about Paulie Fink, she can’t help but wonder how well her classmates knew him, and she may learn more about herself in the process. Recommended for readers who enjoy funny books about figuring out who you are and where you fit in.
